What made you want to work at a Pilates studio: I grew up with a mother who is the epitome of a health guru/granola. We went through a series of different diets, exercises, mantras, etc. At the time I was never aware of how much of an impact it would have on my life. I'm tall so, as you can imagine, I grew very fast. Pilates and Yoga were crucial for my body and allowed me to avoid having serious knee and back issues. I wanted to work at Uptown to emphasize the not only the exercises but the Pilates lifestyle.
What is your most memorable experience at Uptown so far: My most memorable experience at Uptown so far is not necessarily one specific event, but the process of becoming familiar with the Uptown community. It's incredible to get to know each and every instructor and client - learning their life story, their technique, and how Pilates has influenced them. I love being apart of a community that is so closely connected.
Share something about your first Pilates session: My most memorable experience was when I took my first Tower class with Selena, an instructor on the UES. She made the experience so seamless, yet challenging so that I was able to work out comfortably. She has the ability to help you get out of your head to focus on the moment - the movements, state of mind, and body. This is when I discovered my LOVE for Tower. There is so much technique and resistance possible that it makes the entire experience fun. I'm addicted!
What is your favorite exercise or cue that you hear from instructors: I’ve always remembered a specific mantra from the first few Tower classes I took with Catie. She kept telling me to “close the space in my ribs.” Yes, sounds pretty basic, right? But I was shocked at the benefit of her visual recommendation. This allowed me to strengthen and lift from my core, not ribs. This mantra has become a basic checklist for me in every single session that I take.
