WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a system of exercises using special apparatus designed to improve physical strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, coordination, balance, good posture, and enhance mental awareness.

I'M NEW TO PILATES. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO START?

We recommend taking private sessions first. To execute Pilates exercises correctly, and with precision, there is a lot of information to remember. One-on-one private sessions are necessary to impart enough of this information so you can get a good foundation in how the exercises should be performed. Additionally, every body is different so private sessions can facilitate the knowledge of any modifications that you might need due to injuries or ailments. Having this solid foundation will provide greater benefits should you choose to do group classes later for not only you but for others in class.

WHY SHOULD I TRY UPTOWN PILATES?

There are many excellent Pilates studios in NYC, but at Uptown we believe we provide the best overall experience for our clients. We take pride in having a diligent and caring front desk to handle all of your scheduling and payment needs, beautiful and pristinely kept studios in the best neighborhoods, and most importantly the largest selection of classically trained Pilates instructors to meet all of your availability requirements.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO PILATES?

Consistency is key. Two to three times a week is an ideal amount. However, even if once a week is your limit you will still get benefits.

HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

Joseph Pilates said, "In 10 sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you'll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you'll have a whole new body". Exact results may vary by individuals and as we said consistency is key.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REGULAR INSTRUCTOR AND SENIOR INSTRUCTOR?

Our instructors come to you in three different tiers. Starting with amazing we only work our way up in experience and education. All of our instructors come from the most respected and reputable programs of 600+ hours of training. We then offer Senior Instructors with 10+ years of experience and endless amounts of knowledge. These instructors take making Pilates a way of life to another level. To deepen your experience and knowledge even further, take a session with our Master Instructor. With 35+ years of experience, we do not take the term Master lightly.

I'M PREGNANT. IS PILATES GOOD FOR ME?

Always consult with your doctor when doing physical activity during your pregnancy. If you have been doing Pilates before your pregnancy, it can be great to keep your practice going but we recommend doing private sessions so proper modifications can be made for your changing body.

I'M AN ATHLETE. WILL PILATES HELP MY PERFORMANCE?

While Pilates has come to be heavily associated with the dance community, Uptown Pilates strives to reintroduce the exercise to all athletes and body types. Since Pilates helps to create and develop one's core strength and support it can be beneficial and tailored for numerous athletic backgrounds and beneficial to all. Joseph Pilates first came to America to teach and train boxers after all, so from dancers to boxers to tennis players, Pilates is beneficial across all fields!

HOW DO I BECOME A CERTIFIED PILATES INSTRUCTOR?

Because there is no governing body of Pilates anyone can call themselves a Pilates instructor. That is why we encourage you to find out where your instructor received their certification as many programs differ between required program hours, lineage, and the fundamentals of what they are instructing.

WHAT KIND OF PAYMENT METHODS DO YOU TAKE?

We take Cash, Check, and all major Credit Cards (Visa, Master Card, Discover & American Express). Gift Certificates are also available. All payments for sessions and classes are non-refundable and payment is expected at the time of your visit. We do not accept insurance as a form of payment.

WHAT ARE UPTOWN PILATES STUDIO POLICIES?

All sessions and classes are by appointment only. We do require socks to be worn in the studio at all times. All cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged the full price of the service. Packages expire automatically three months after the date purchased. We do not offer memberships. You can extend packages that are expired for a reactivation fee of $20. This fee will extend your package for 1 month. You are not eligible for reactivation if your package has been expired for over a year.

WHAT MAKES A DUAL CONTROL CLASS DIFFERENT?

In these group classes you will become a true CONTROLOGIST. Uptown Pilates is continually working to improve your workouts to make them more personalized, well-rounded, and unique. Being able to offer both reformer and tower work within the same class is the next step on this path. A favorite of many Pilates practitioners, the reformer does exactly what it sounds like, it reforms your body. Find the symmetry, connection, and stability that your body needs to take you to new heights. Now you can reap these benefits without losing the importance of mat and tower work. Classes offer all the variety and mix of equipment that was once only available in private sessions. This alternative choice to private sessions will improve your posture, tone your entire body, and slim that waist while strengthening your whole core.
